Interview Questions for Management Job Seekers

A majority of young graduates nowadays want to pursue a log-term career in management. One reason for this is that management jobs offer challenges, responsibilities, prestige, and of course a huge salary. A manager has to carry out vital functions in a company regarding interpersonal communication, information system, and many other tasks. However, you need to possess extraordinary managerial skill sets to reach the top level in any organization. Question 1: Tell me about yourself.
Answer : This is usually an opening question in every interview. Always be careful while answering this question, because a majority of people tend to run off at the mouth. Keep your answer limited to one or two minutes. Do not forget to mention about educational details, work history, and recent career experience. Since this is a warm-up question, do not waste your time here.

Question 2: What do you know about our organization or company?
Answer: You need to do your home work to answer this question. It is advisable to read about the products or services, revenues, reputation, image, goals, problems, management style, people, and history of the organization or company. Your answer is supposed to show that you have researched about the desired information. An ideal answer starts somewhat like this: "During my job search, I've found a number of companies and yours is one of the few that interests me, for some specific reasons."

Question 3: Why are you leaving (did you leave) your present (last) job?
Answer: Answer this question honestly. Be as brief and to the point as possible without explaining negative points about yourself. If you were laid off in an across-the-board cutback, say so; otherwise, indicate that the move was your decision and the result of your own action. Make sure that you do not mention personality conflicts.

Question 4: Why should we hire you?
Answer: You need self assessment to answer this question. Self assessment would allow you to think about your abilities, experience, and work energy. Do not hesitate to mention all your strong points. You can also say that your capability, interests, and skills make you valuable from the company's point of view.

Question 5: What, according to you, does the position that you have applied for mean?.
Answer: Here you ought to know the job responsibilities of a person who serves for this particular position. Your answer to this question needs to be brief, practical, and task oriented. Make sure that you have really understood what the designation involves, before you actually attempt an answer to the question.

Question 6: What is your management style?
Answer: Before answering this question blindly, make sure that you know enough about the company's management style. From your answer, the interviewer should quickly find out that your management style is compatible with the company's management style. If this is done, then you are one step ahead. You can mention your style as 'task oriented' or 'result oriented'. Your answer will speak about your personality, problem solving skills, and your implementing ability. If you have the ability to gets things done by motivating people and distributing responsibilities, then you can address your working style as 'participatory management'.

Question 7: Are you a good manager? Can you give me a few examples?
Answer: This is another question that requires self assessment. You will have to know the qualities and tasks of a manager and check whether you possess the specific qualities to reach a high position in a managerial job. Try and keep your focus on the achievements and challenges that you came across your previous job. Always keep in mind that relying on examples from your own experience has a positive impact on the interviewer.

Question 8: What do you think is the most difficult thing about being a manager or an executive?
Answer: This question again demands to mention the principal duties of a manager or an executive. They are planning, execution, and cost control. You can say that performing all the three duties simultaneously and successfully is one of the most difficult things for a manager. You can also mention that the most difficult task is to motivate the company's employees and manage them to get the planned and completed output from them on time and within the budget.

Question 9: What are your long term career goals?
Answer: The best way in which you can start an answer to this question is 'In a company or organization like yours, I would like to work...' However, you will have to think for a while before answering, since this question tests your planning ability. Do not start with a typical answer, but try to relate your career goals with those of the company or organization. This way, you could be able to find yourself capable of working in that organization. This question enables the interviewer to check whether you fit the desired expectations by the company.

Question 10: Any questions for me?
Answer: Asking a logical doubt at the end of an interview is the sign of an interactive person. It is not compulsory to ask a question, but asking one or two thoughtful and smart doubts always leaves a positive impression on the interviewer.

Management skills include resolving conflicts, carrying out negotiations, motivating workers, build and develop pure working relationships, and give justifiable explanations.
