How to Write a Resume: A Perfect Guideline for Job Seekers

Resume writing is one of the most challenging jobs now a day. It is the most important task of a Job seeker to know, how to write a resume and how to write it well. We write resume for an interview call but most of the time it does not catch the attention of the recruiter. So we become frustrated and disappointed.  I mentioned resume writing as a job because it is the first step to enter into the service arena. A proper resume can move you to the next level of your life. In this post I will explain all of the important factors that need to be consider before writing a good resume. I will also give you some tips to make your resume attractive and resourceful with some resume examples. 

How to Write a Resume

Resume is a document used by persons to present their backgrounds, skills, educational qualifications and interests. Resumes can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment. A typical resume contains a summary of relevant job experience and education. The resume is comparable to curriculum vitae (CV) in many countries. However, it is substantially shorter than a CV in Canada, U.S. and Australia. In French, resume means summary.

Resume arrangements differ widely, but the following procedures are general. Arrangements are given below:

1) Logically arrange information on:

  • Education (institutions, dates, degrees, major field); 
  • Experience (dates, places, firms/companies, duties, accomplishments); 
  • Personal details (memberships, interests, achievements – but not religion, race, sex); 
  • Special information (achievements, qualifications, capabilities.
2) Construct a heading for the entire resume and sub-headings for the parts.
3) Include other vital information such as objectives and contact information.
4) Arrange the data for best eye appeal – making the resume balanced – not crowded.

My suggestion: Use Your Resume to Obtain an Interview, Not a Job. Most of us do the mistake in this point. How to write a resume begins here. Following thinks should be considered while writing a resume:

Selecting background facts
1) Begin by reviewing the background facts you have assembled and see what is really required that will help your reader.

Arranging the facts into groups
2) Sort out the facts by groups – like: job functions, dates or a combination.
3) Also consider groups such as achievements and qualifications

4) Write headings for the resume and its parts using topic headings that are most common.
5) Make your headings look as if they are talking to your reader – in saying “please read me”.
6) Distinguish your headings by using different FONTS/SIZES. 

Contact Information
7) Display your contact information prominently.

Objective Statement
The purpose of the career objective is to communicate clearly the type of position in which you are interested.

8) Consider your OBJECTIVE statement.
9) The statement should cover the job you are looking for.

Presenting the Information
10) List the facts under the headings.

11) When writing about work experience, in the least include dates, places, companies and responsibilities. Use the term "experience" instead of "work history" or "employment," so that you can include full and part-time jobs, self-employment, volunteer work; and practicum, field, and cooperative education experiences. 

12) When appropriate show achievements.

13) In the experience section use action verbs (Ordered, Performed, Planned, Served, Scheduled, Supervised etc) strengthen appeal; Like- “Performed project coordination and general administrative duties.”

14) For education, include institutions, dates, degrees, and areas of study. Degrees should be listed in reverse chronological order with the most recent listed first. 

15) For legal reasons, some personal information (on race, religion, sex) should probably not be included.

16) Information on activities and interests tells about one’s personal qualities. Rank order professional associations, leadership positions and other activities by importance to the career objective. There is no need to say "Member of...". Emphasize your leadership roles. Spell out the name of the organization: do not use abbreviations or acronyms. 

Include any specialized skills, training, certification or licenses such as foreign language ability, ability to sign for the deaf, pilot's license, chauffeur license, etc. Other relevant data such as "Traveled throughout Europe" can also be listed.

17) List references but make sure you request permission from the person whose name you will use as a reference.

  • Do not include personal information, e.g., age, sex, height, weight, marital status.
  • Do not use the pronoun “I” or third person pronoun
  • Do not clutter your resume with nonessential information
  • Do not make any misrepresentations
